- Finally decided on Hard Drive. 500 GB is too little, a fast 1000GB is too expensive , WD 1GB has had some DOA, seagate 7200.11 drive are failing after a few months (see Maximum Pc). Have heard that some OEM WD drives fail a month or two later possible from shipping (see newegg), so decided to order retail hard drive. Best Deal (price/performance/size) is the following drive:
- $179.90 = Qty=TWO of Western Digital WD6400CSRTL 640GB Internal 3.5" Hard Drive
- $6.95 = shipping from JR.com
- -------
- $0.00 = Total from JR
- $1,314.68 =- Previous Total

- Have order my parts from various stores. Here is the current system configuration:
- April 10th, 2009
- From the Asus web site, I have determined that my Antec 500 PSU will barely have enough amps to handle the system (no reserve amps). Have decided to get a 750W power supply.
- Aprit 5th, 2009
- I have decided to have Microcenter assemble the Motherboard, Memory, thermopaste, and install the CPU for $20. I wanted OCZ 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory but MicroCenter does not carry it, bummer. Will have to go with Corsair Memory XMS3 6GB (3x 2GB) DDR3-1600 (PC-12800) CL9 DIMM Memory Kit as it is cheaper, and I can get 12GB of memory.
- April 3rd, 2009
- Have decided on the the Intel Core I7 920 Cpu. Started putting together list of components I will need and gathering reviews of different I7 motherboards. memory, etc. I've decided to get an ASUS P6T Deluxe V2. Most of the reviews on Newegg and other sites like it, except that Asus has a bad "quality" reputation lately with many DOA motherboards (Dead On Arrival), To avoid this problem, I have decided to buy the motherboard locally from Microcenter so if I have a DOA, I can return it to the store for an exchange without paying to ship it back.
- April 1st, 2009.
- After a few years of saving, I have finally decided to build my new pc. This pc will not be a gaming pc, it will be mostly used to run Chief Architect Software & to scan in photos & to edit digital videos. I am looking to spend between $1000 and $1300, no more than $1500. A reliable system to last me 4 to 7 yrs is more important than speed. I originally investigated building a a quad core Q9550 P45 or X48 motherboard, but after I found out that Microcenter had the Intel Core I7 920 Cpu on sale for $229.99 and that a I7 motherboard+CPU+Memory would only cost about $100 more, I changed my mind and decided to go with an I7.
